I have received some comments about Japanese houses in my last blog and it seems like I need to rectify something.
Only houses in areas where the temperature doesn't fall below -4 or -5 are built in the way that I described. Houses on Hokkaido (the big island up north) are built with concrete and have central heating (so I have heard, but not yet seen myself) as the temperatures can drop below -20 in those area. So down here it's cheaper to rebuild and waste money on heating whereas further up north it's cheaper to invest in a better house.
